So, you lost Magic Margin's drawing for Rhodia notebooks. Dammit!
Well, hold on just one minute, now. Don't go getting your knickers in a twist. Seems that Uwajimaya opened a new location 'round these parts, so you're in luck.
What? What does that have to do with notebooks, you ask? Well, Uwajimaya, an insanely great Asian grocery store, tends to carry imported stationery and whatnot (and even has a bookstore in its downtown Seattle location). I was ambling through the store's latest new location the other day, and found, in a display of Sumi-e painting supplies, various sizes of the highly-regarded Apica notebook.
Now, one doesn't tend to find Apica notebooks lying about any old where; I've only been able to buy them from eBay importers in the past. So I consider this a good thing.
One of the most appealing qualities of the Apica notebook, you will undoubtedly agree, is its cryptic cover phrase:
I grabbed two red ones of the 5" x 7"-ish size, and would like to share one with you. Leave a comment about your favorite notebook brand and I'll pick a winner this Friday, April 1st (not an April Fool's joke, I assure you).

Pretty!! Red IS my favorite color... Just sayin'... ;u)
My favorite, is this non-descript, black notebook I picked up at Hobby Lobby some time ago. Its a hardback, with a flexible band to keep it closed and a pen/pencil loop holder.
There is "Leather Etc." embossed on the back. Maybe that is the brand?
In any event, it makes a great journal and has nice, thick pages that my Lamy Safari takes to quite nicely.
Wow, I need to live somewhere else, because the closest thing I have to an Asian grocer is the "international" section at Giant.
I really do like myself a Moleskine. So long as I don't use a gel pen, a regular rollerball just gliiiiiiides so well.
And I must say, that notebook rocks my socks.
They have them at U Bookstore. Perhaps not at the Bellevue location.
OK, as a lucky winner of a recent Rhodia, I must count myself out of this draw. But, to be honest, the best notebooks I ever used were ones I made myself. Some good paper, a saw, some glue and some thread are about everything you need. Good luck everyone!
Top 2 all-time favs: Moleskine (of course), and Clairefontaine. Both were great with my Caran d'Ache fountain pen that I sadly misplaced in 2009. Still great with the Pelikano, though! :)
I like spiral-bound notebooks, and lately I've been using the Penway notebooks (from my last back-to-school haul at Walgreens) for random writing/ideas/journaling. And what *is* that inscription supposed to mean?
I found the Piccadilly XL lined in Jan (a Moleskine knock-off) that I love, but can't find more so will be going to Moles, I guess...
lovely red notebook ;)
I'm still quite partial to my moleskine.
I have for years been a Moleskine chump. That is, until I laid hands on a Rhodia pad.
So...smooth.
In any case, I will continue to persevere until I win some kind of thing.
I still haven't found my favourite yet. I really like using Rhodia No. 11 for my every day fragment jottings and a nondescript Paperchase number for my general writings and story drafting though. A favourite notebook is a tricky thing to find, and even more so to settle on for good.
I'm also a Moleskine convert, preferring the softbacked unlined ones to carry around. But I've also never outgrown the classic black & white Mead comp books from my school daze!
Well, I'm at the point of having to choose a new braindump daily notebook, and I'm in a bind.
For a long time, I was a Moleskine addict. Liked them a lot. But they started to fall apart after a few months of being hauled around everywhere. So I tried the Miquelrius flexible one--not the super thick one but thinner, A5 Moleskine sized. Well, I finished it up and after 6 months, it still looks good. The biggest thing about them is 1. they smell like petroleumy stuff when you first get them, not paper. 2. They're hard to find--I only know one place that sometimes carry them.
It's a dilemma.
I never had hands-on with this brand of Notebook. It would be great to try one. I'm a Rhodia and Clairfontaine user myself.
Great contest! I don't have a favorite brand- I try them all! I am a little partial to Clairfontaine's colored paper notebooks.
my favorite is probably clairefontaine, they have the smoothest paper ever
Ryan, I didn't see them at the UW bookstore the last time I was there, although I have seen them there in the past.
I've never properly used Clairefontaine, got to get on that.
My favorite is a :
Double-O-Ring ruled paper 6" x 9" by Field Notes.

I'd say my favorite notebooks, just for the whimsy factor, if nothing else, were a set of three that I got at Borders a few years ago. They had little monsters and robots on them and I used them to keep books logs from 2008-2010. I haven't seen them on the Borders website since then, but they were the Paperchase brand.
I know it's overkill but I've been writing on a drawing pad. I like how thick the pages are. Great for adding sketches and drawings along with your writing, welcomes just about any medium... Strathmore Drawing 400 series, 6x8 size.
So, here's a quote that resonates with me, because I use notebooks I stitch and bind myself: "This consists of entertaining half-cooked ideas, getting out a bunch of paper supplies, making a big old mess, taking a coffee break, and then realizing, dozens of distractions later, that you have a bunch of stuff to clean up."
I've never seen notebooks like that - too cool.
My favorites, besides the traditional moleskine, are notebooks handmade by my lovely roommate. She's very crafty, and when I told her I needed a little pocket notebook, she said "I can totally make that", and she did, just by hand-stitching some pages together. It has a little more love than a lot of notebooks.
And of course, I have to use Pilot G2 pens. Those pens make my life.
I'm a fan of the moleskine reporter style notebook. My husband has recently become a whitelines convert.
Oh man. I use the softback Moleskine 5x8 lined for graduate school notes and musings. I use the small 3x5 Moleskine for my poetry and ramblings, only using the thick paper. I use the 5x8 hardbound Moleskine for client work and meetings and to paste notes for teaching and speaking engagements.
But the best thing I found, a 1950s six ring Cambridge binder, the perfect 9x7.5 size with retro college ruled paper. My dad found two from his days in college and I found another randomly. So I have three and now use high quality resume paper in them, no lines. Perfect!!!
Cheers,
Tim
Include me in the drawing! I'm wild for notebooks of all kinds! And although it means a much more significant commitment, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND Iona handmade books out of Texas. They even have a cool video on how it's done. You can find them easily on the web.
Here, a pic of my recent opened Epica. A very good friend of mine brought it to me from London. Cheers from Argentina! C.S.
