Silent Type deadline

As you may know, the deadline for submissions to Silent Type was yesterday. Out of the 25 people who signed up, I have gotten 8 11 submissions in time.

***crickets chirping*****

Lucky for you, I will keep checking the box until July 11th, if you want to put the pedal to the floor. (Do add your name and info to the spreadsheet if you've joined us at the last minute). If you can't make it, I understand. It would be helpful for layout planning purposes however if you could indicate on the spreadsheet that I should not expect an envelope--I'll add a "Withdraw" columm. Hopefully you can make the next issue, if you'd like.

Contributors:

Silent Type will have a table of contents, which will list the title(s) of your pieces, the genre/type of piece, and your name. I will take this information from data you provide on the sign-up sheet. If you are contributing, please visit/revisit this sheet and make sure you have provided title(s), type(s) of work, and your name exactly as you want it listed. (If you have submitted multiple pieces, be clear which title refers to which format, etc.).

I think this is going to turn out to be an interesting/fun publication (that is, if you are a retronerd), so thanks to the participants. I haven't seen one yet where I thought "What the hell was X thinking?!" despite all the sturm und drang over horrrrrible submissions in the comments of certain bloggers cough Speegle cough.

PS: If you know of any artists who want to contribute, please sign them up. We need some visuals to break up all the typin.' I may resort to using my own bad outsider art drawing of a Lettera 22 if I get desperate. (That said, we do have one great illustration and several photographs, so thanks for those y'all).

I can't help but to feel that I have been singled out somehow.

How am I s'posed to take this?

if you want to put the petal to the floor.

Aw, man....

As to the topic at hand, I actually don't remember what I titled the story, though I think I wrote it on the sheet. I remember clearly how I mucked up the top of the page trying to fit in a lame explanation of why I'd written the story, but I don't remember what I called it. The poem should be labeled, and should really probably be my submission. I only sent both because I couldn't decide which was least likely to embarrass me greatly in front of my friends. ;)

Word verif: plati. That has to be typewriter related, no?

Oops, a friend of mine has mocked me in the past for mixing up 'petal' and 'pedal.'

Corrected.

Plati are of course, multiple platens.

And someone who types too lightly because they are afraid of damaging platens is a...plati-puss.

Hmm, I guess there's a difference between vanity typing and actually writing to publishable standards after all!

Umm... I don't understand that last comment--??

You've been trolled! Congratulations -- the blog is all growed up now that serious writers are leaving anonymous criticisms in-between bouts of puppy-kicking and swiping candy from children.

Noq if you'll excuse me, I need to go feed my vanity. [rolling eyes]

I get that it's a swipe, but it's ironically not written well enough to make sense in a specific way.

Do you think it's a troll? It just seems like such a non-sequitur.

I've seen better trolls, for sure. I think it was a broad dig at people who signed up, but didn't (yet) submit something, on the grounds that it's easier to partake of a vanity project like blogging than it is to submit something of "publishable standards."

Little does the troll know that we have very, very low standards in the typecast community. [Points at self.]

Kids these days. Some of us remember the Great Usenet Flame Wars of '95. Now there were some blathering, ad hominem attacks you could stand behind/take offense at!

Oooh now I get the comment (I think?)

I do like this term "vanity typing" though. Let me be the first to say that Strikethru and Silent Type are both vanity
typ(ecast)ing publications.

Ahhh, maybe that's why I'm not feelin' it. I do remember the old flame wars. I think of them every morning when I put in my glass eye and screw on my peg-leg.

Isn't all typing vanity typing in a way? "Hey, lookit what I did!"

A vanity could also make for an interesting typing table. It'd probably be good for those of us who need to unlearn the habit of mirroring their characters' every expression as they write. (Meaning me...)

Actually, I get the sense that Silent Type will be the opposite of a vanity publication.

The main posture of a vanity press is pretense--creating the impression that the work in question is the product of a "real" publishing house. But this puppy will be in the proud tradition of zines, no? DIY aesthetic, not pretending to be something else. Typewritten pages will, by definition, underscore that.

My word verification code for this post is "hyromp". Exactly! Hyromp that all that.

LFP: I am so glad that I'm not the only person who does that.

Um...so I've been looking at the list of ST submissions, and there seem to be quite a few essay-ish looking things. Please tell me that I am not the only one who did bad flash fic.

Little Flower Petals said...

I did a bad short story kinda thingie--not sure if it qualifies as flash fiction or not. We can share the bad fiction award between us!

Most excellent. Go Team Fiction!
